MY ROLE IN THE TEAM, INSPIRATIONS, EVALUATIONS

Working in a group each of team member has his own role.
My position in our first assignment is an EDITOR.

In this section I wanna describe my research process framed around creative and technical considerations. I will concentrate on my job role within my team, describing my technical development process, searching for ideas, consider some editing solutions.

The theme of our 1 minute documentary film is GRAFFITI, so what is my first association when I think about this artistic graffiti area? Very few thoughts I have in my mind are Hip-Hop, something illegal, rebellion? I think if I could edit footage having those thoughts in my mind the final result wouldn't be the real one. This is very false and not fair to think stereotypically about at least unique, brilliant street art. My video edition definitely won't go in this way.

With the film edition I could show the topic in so many different ways, as something mystery, prohibited, exciting, very artistic. The footage is the material I'm gonna work on but the editor can change the atmosphere of the film completely. An editor decides how to show the personality of one person, or the topic in general in a movie.

So what could be my first idea how to edit the movie about the street art, about the graffiti man?
If I would think still in my first impression way - I could do it with very heavy music, dark sounds, intensity of changing footage on the screen without showing the man's face.
BUT in this way I would show the person as a bad character doing something inappropriate.
I don't wanna do this, so I have started to think about this graffiti area deeply.
I decided to leave all my first stereotypes coming to my head.

I started to look for some documentary films on YouTube. I wanted to start understand maybe the ideology, maybe the point of view about making the city walls more colorful. I have wanted to find the answer about the REASON of doing this, Is it about passion to draw and the piece of paper is not big enough? I think the understanding is very useful to show the topic in a right way, adding to it specific tone of effects, editing technics.

YouTube offers a lot of videos, here is the link of my first one I liked more than the rest.
Why? The way of showing the topic, the film edition really inspire me and I could try to use some edition ideas doing my job with our movie.

_______________________________________________________________
Im coming back to this post after few days and I should start again.
What to do if the conception of the film has changed?

I have to start preparing my edition, research to the new person, new topic of our documentary film.
I was considering the movie edition thinking about GRAFFITI, but now the topic is changed.
What about a CLASSICAL GUITARIST?
Yes, this is our new idea which is slightly different than the previous one so what is my conception to find myself in this area?

The first proposition is Digital, Busy World vs. Classical Guitar Music with really talented Renata, as a main guitar female player in our film. We are before the shooting day so when I see about the final result I would like show busy life, noisy streets, rush, multimedia life and as a contrast the calm place where Renata seats, plays her guitar and speaks about her passion. I am a fun of technics used in a movie: ''Requiem for a dream'' directed by Darren Aronofsky where the editor was Jay Rabinowitz. The part with fast variety of shoots and sounds was used even on our seminars as an example how to create this great effect where we had a chance to see it in a slow motion. This is the video I mentioned.

I really like this type of edition, I think it fits perfect when we want to cross the line between two different levels of dynamics used in a movie. Classical vs Modern, Calm vs Noise and the woman between it with her guitar.
When I think about the final movie I would like to add the sequences of the big city rush, into Renata's: when she just plays. I don't know yet how my group see the final result, so this is my vision for now, but it depends also how the director sees it. We still discuss our ideas trying to find the most possible one to be realised just in one day of our shooting time.

I'm also spending my time on a website: http://www.lynda.com,
which is a very useful platform to watch tutorials how to edit movies using Adobe Premiere Pro. There are many videos useful to watch to learn how to develop as an editor.

When I started using this platform I found that the very important part is PLANNING,
but when I don't have any footage yet I can just imagine how I would see the final result to share my ideas with the group and in this way I may have a real impact in it what we are gonna film later.

Another conception we have as a team is recording the woman playing guitar in different locations, but in each time it should be the same song, then we could match them all and show the variety of different shoots but all of them matched together create the complete song.
I really like this idea, cause the view on the screen would be more interesting. I wanna show the passion of this woman using her own music in background. Additional sounds may be added in parts about the city life. I can use traffic noise, media sounds to create the heavy feeling as a contrast to the classic music, really soft melodies, pure passion of the delicate woman playing her music around a places with very classical and old architecture.

_______________________________________________________________
We ended our shooting yesterday so now I can start organise it what we have done and try to create the most possible final effect in my mind.
The shoots we have were made only in one location so I can remove the idea to match different places as a backgrounds to one song played by Renata.
We have 2 different songs played in the same location, very simple background, white wall, wood and the classic architecture matches to her classic music. We had 3 cameras, so at least we have many different angles showing her playing guitar. In final edition I want to show them all carefully with the interview. This part when Renata is speaking, describing her passion has a different background, which is still realised in the same room, so the style is still the same, very classic. Im considering to start the film with her voice in background when we can see her playing guitar, or maybe only a guitar strings, but we couldn't hear the music, we could just hear her speaking some sentences from the interview part, something very deep about her passion what would a good start to keep an attention of an audience. Next I could give 1-2 seconds of silent or just start with the shoot where the camera starts to move from the left to the right and she starts to play the guitar. I need to split angles carefully and use the best ones that show her emotions.
Then I want to start the proper interview, sometimes as a background voice, sometimes with Renata on the screen speaking. We don't have any footage of the city rush, people outside, on the streets, so my previous idea with confrontation two worlds together is already not possible to finalise.
I need to create a very classic video, only based on the pure passion to the music.

I'm really inspired now by this film now. I think it shows the classic emotions very well.

As a group we have many of the angles used in this movie, but in our locations. We have wide, close up, medium angles and many more. Im also hoping the sound is okay because when I am an editor I see the movies on the screen trying to create something we all are proud of but I still can't forget that this SOUND is extremely important in this situation. I could say that SOUND is one of the main parts here in this edition. The strong quality of the movie should be support with a strong, resonant background. I'm waiting for the footage and let's get it started... Thinking positive I want to create the optimal variance of our different angles footage of the passion on the screen with the sound of Renata's guitar and voice all a bit covered with subtle dissolving technic to find the continuation through the whole movie as it is the one song, one story, one woman - with one guitar.
